Ghyll Royd Joins Ilkley Art Trail

Junior artists are exhibiting their own work to hundreds of art enthusiasts during this year’s Ilkley Art Trail. Ghyll Royd School has set up the first ever Wharfedale Art Competition where local schools submit their pupil’s best work to share with the local community.

The exhibition will run throughout the course of the Ilkley Art Trail, displaying the work of children from Ashlands Primary, Ben Rhydding Primary, Ghyll Royd School, Moorfield School and Burley Oaks Primary. Local artists Joanne Tinker, Linda Dewart and Kerry J Stoker will judge the drawing, 3D, textiles and group submissions and pick a winner for each age category from Early Years to Upper Key Stage Two. There will then be an awards ceremony the week after the trail to announce the winners. The eclectic mix of age groups and categories is sure to provide a fascinating insight into the imaginations and creativity of children in the local community.

The Competition has been designed and set up by Ghyll Royd Art Teacher Miss Keeley Smith. Miss Smith said: “I’m really excited to bring this idea to life and to have had a great response from local schools who are keen to take part. I’d like to personally thank Sarah Thomas, Chair of the Ilkley Art Trail who has supported the Wharfedale Art Competition and helped us organise what is set to be a wonderful addition to this extraordinary event series.”

Headteacher at Ghyll Royd School, Mr David Martin, said: “We’re looking forward to welcoming and exhibiting the work of some very talented local schoolchildren. We’re expecting hundreds of visitors over the course of the trail who will get an exciting glimpse at the work of potential future artists.”

The Ilkley Art Trail is running for its 6th year with a magnificent total of 64 artists exhibiting across 30 venues. The Wharfedale Art Competition will be held in Ghyll Royd School’s Multipurpose Hall and will be open to visitors from 10.00am until 3.00pm from Thursday 5th October until Sunday 8th October 2017.
