Green fingered pupils are sprucing up the gardens in Burley-in-Wharfedale as part of a local community project.
Pupils in Forms 1 and 2 brought their spades, trowels and gloves into school before setting off to the war memorial in Burley-in-Wharfedale for an afternoon of planting. The children worked together in groups with the help of the school’s groundsman Bernie Connor, to arrange and plant the bold, colourful flowers.
Originally, each School House had been asked to get involved with a local community project, which prompted Form 1 teacher Mrs Downes to get in touch with the Burley-in-Wharfedale Community Trust. After finding out that the Trust needed some help maintaining the five planting tubs which surround the town’s war memorial, the whole school decided to get involved in looking after the area.
The plants will be watered regularly and checked upon by pupils and teachers from the school. In a few months, the flowers will be dug up and changed by Key Stage Two pupils in time for Remembrance Day.
Duncan Ault, Chair of the Burley-in-Wharfedale Community Trust said: “A big thank you to Ghyll Royd School pupils and staff for helping purchase and plant out the bedding plants in the new tubs around the War Memorial in Burley. This is the second time that the School has been involved in this Community project and we welcome and encourage their enthusiastic help.”
A plaque will be fixed to one of the planters so the children can be reminded of their wonderful work within the local community.
Headteacher Mr David Martin said: “It’s great to see our young pupils getting involved with this community project which helps the environment and the people in the local area and provides Burley-in-Wharfedale with a fitting addition to its war memorial . I am very proud that the children from each House have enjoyed planting the flowers and having the responsibility of looking after them.”
