School Councils

Pupil Voice: School Council & Eco-Council

We actively encourage pupils to take ownership of their school community. Through our School Council and Eco-Council, children are empowered to speak up, lead, and make a difference.

School Council

Each form elects a School Council Representative at the start of the academic year. Representatives are awarded a badge and play a key role in school life by:

  • Gathering and sharing their class’s views
  • Reporting back on Council discussions
  • Participating in half-termly meetings

These meetings give children a platform to raise ideas, voice concerns, and be involved in shaping their school.

Eco-Council

Similarly, each class elects an Eco-Council Representative. This team leads Ghyll Royd’s environmental efforts, supporting the Eco-Schools programme and championing sustainable initiatives. Their responsibilities include:

  • Conducting Environmental Reviews
  • Representing the whole school in eco decision-making
  • Implementing and reviewing our Eco Action Plan

Eco-Council meetings take place every half-term and are reported to senior leadership and governors.

“Leaders promote pupils’ social, economic and political understanding successfully. Pupils learn about how government and the legislature work. Through the elections of school councillors and the head boy and girl, pupils experience democracy in action.” ISI, 2025
