At Ghyll Royd we recognise that children need plenty of exercise and value the benefits that this can have in so many other areas. Our pupils enjoy a level of physical activity that well exceeds the national average and suitably compliments our Healthy Schools programme. There is also the option to increase this even further through the extra curricular programme.
Our all inclusive policy enables every child, regardless of ability or age, to take part in and enjoy elements of the National Curriculum and all have the opportunity to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle through positive experiences.
“Pupils get very good advice on how to live a healthy lifestyle and school meals are very appetizing and nutritious”. (Ofsted 2008)
The PE and sports curriculum at Ghyll Royd is taught by specialist teachers who help to develop the skills and techniques in all the different disciplines. Children from the age of 2 and a half enjoy the expertise of our qualified teachers and basic skills in a variety of disciplines are the focus. Our younger children enjoy developing their skills through a variety of sports activities including badminton, table tennis, basketball, and circuit training, hockey, gymnastics and dance, orienteering, indoor athletics, rounders and cross country. The traditional sports of rugby, football, athletics, and cricket are also taught and children in KS2 regularly enjoy friendly and competitive fixtures with both independent and state schools in the area.
“The new sports hall provides excellent opportunities for pupils to participate in a wide range of sports. The boys particularly enjoy this aspect of their education”. (Ofsted 2008)
The children also enjoy a half hour of swimming every week which takes place at the local baths.
The PE curriculum is underpinned by inter house sporting competitions and annual events such as the Wharfedale Cup Football tournament, the Ghyll Royd Cross Country and the Ghyll Royd Rugby Sevens.
Ghyll Royd is now a member of the Schools Sports Partnership and has recently been awarded the Activemark Award. As part of the partnership the children have access to an even greater range of activities and events and last year represented the West Yorkshire area schools in the Yorkshire finals of the Kwik Cricket, putting on a great display at Headingley.
