We’re Delighted!
Staff, Governors, parents and boys are delighted with the results of their first inspection by a team of Her Majesty’s Inspectors. Head teacher , Irene Connor said, “I am thrilled. The Inspection was a very positive process to go through.

Staff and Governors have been waiting in anticipation, since the school moved to this wonderful site, for inspectors to recognise the quality of education that Ghyll Royd offers. I felt the Inspectors were very perceptive and quickly recognised that the school aims ; to provide a high quality education for boys, ensuring that they are happy and have a feeling of self worth, are being met .We hoped all our new facilities would be mentioned in the report as enhancing the education we offer. We are very confident that we provide a superior education for boys and I felt the Inspectors acknowledged this in their report”.

The team spent two days at the school observing lessons, mixing and talking with the boys at playtime and around the school. They also met with parents, Governors and staff to discuss the organisation and management of the school and spoke with groups of boys about different aspects of school life.

Inspection Report
The Inspectors recognised that the boys at Ghyll Royd enjoy an outstanding curriculum and  that, “all boys, whatever their starting point, make good progress and achieve results which are above and often well above those expected for their age and ability. All pupils have very good attitudes towards their work.”

There is an emphasis on English and mathematics and other subjects are taught through a cross curricular-approach. The boys have the luxury of specialist teaching in PE/Games, Music and French and as the boys move into KS2 the different foundation subjects are taught by the same teacher to ensure continuity and progression.

Sport features prominently on the curriculum at Ghyll Royd and the school maintains that, ‘it can always find a sport that a boy can enjoy’. Boys enjoy far more PE and Games than the national average and boys across the age ranges enjoy many sports fixtures with other schools. “The provision made for extra curricular activities is very good.”

The new sports hall and the extensive school grounds provide excellent opportunities for pupils to participate in a wide range of sports and the boys particularly enjoy this aspect of their education”. The school has recently joined the Bradford Schools Sports Partnership and is currently working towards their Activemark award which recognises the commitment towards developing a healthy lifestyle, the amount of sport the school provides for its pupils and its contribution to sport in the community.

“Behaviour is outstanding both in class and around the school. All pupils have mature and thoughtful attitudes, have very good social skills and are very welcoming to visitors and courteous to each other and their teachers.”

The Inspectors happened to be present when there was a fire alarm whilst boys, and a visiting football team, were in the showers; they were very impressed with the sensible and responsible behaviour of all the boys on a wet and cold afternoon.

The Inspectors rated the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of the boys as outstanding. One parent was quoted as saying that, “Ghyll Royd School is a magical place for learning.” The inspectors recognised that the school has a family atmosphere, and like a family, the boys learn to take care of each other, they take on responsibilities within the school and are very good ambassadors for Ghyll Royd.

Mrs Connor said, “The greatest compliment to be paid to us by one of the Inspectors, who has three boys, was that if she lived in Ilkley she would want her sons to be coming to Ghyll Royd School.
