At Ghyll Royd we pride ourselves on meeting the children's individual needs and enabling them to reach their potential by providing a supportive, exciting and rewarding learning environment.
We offer a well rounded education that is rigorous, challenging and of the highest standard. Our children move through the school, and finally onto their secondary schools, with confidence and an eagerness to succeed and perform at the highest level.
The children's learning at Ghyll Royd is guided by the English National Curriculum with some changes and additions to enhance the teaching and learning taking place.
Teachers carefully plan to ensure that all the necessary learning objectives are met, and stimulating schemes of work provide interesting and challenging programmes of study based on cross curricular themes.
At Ghyll Royd we provide a programme of learning to equip the children with the skills and knowledge needed in today’s ever changing society. Teachers acknowledge that boys and girls may have different learning styles and understand the importance of using a variety of approaches.
We believe in helping children to achieve their potential in all areas and set targets and differentiated activities to ensure that their individual needs are catered for.
Curriculum changes are also made in preparation for the children sitting the entrance examinations of the local Grammar Schools during Year 6. Children from Year 3 upwards have weekly lessons in verbal and non verbal exercises in preparation.
We are always very proud of the children's achievements and in September 2008 we saw our Form 6 boys move confidently onto the following schools.
8 boys to Bradford Grammar School
1 boy on a Headmasters Award to Giggleswick
1 boy to Upper Wharfedale School
1 boy to Ashville College
1 boy to Oakhill College
1 boy to Ilkley Grammar School
1 boy to Ermysteds (out of catchment)
The grounds and facilites at Ghyll Royd are outstanding and unmatched in the local area. Visitors often comment that they do not realise how much more of the school there is behind the main building.
The Nursery at Ghyll Royd is housed in two classrooms on the ground floor and has its own unique play space. The Reception facilities in September will also occupy two classrooms on the ground floor in the main building and will also have its own dedicated play area. Year 1,2 and 3 occupy the upstairs of main school along with our state of the art ICT suite and our dedicated Science and Art room.
The rest of our Key Stage 2 classes enjoy being taught in our renovated Coach House with classrooms designed to recognise their roles and responsibilities in school.
Our music department occupies renovated outbuildings and enables staff to teach individually and to whole class groups with ease.
Ghyll Royd School now boasts a tremendous sports hall which gets transformed into a wonderful performing arts facility when needed. Extensive changing and locker rooms enable children to get changed comfortably and the hall guarantees that the full range of sports can be taught to children of all ages.
Outdoors there is both a tarmacked and grassed play area with climbing frame and an extensive sports field with permanent rugby posts.
The school owns a lot of land that is still undeveloped so there are lots of exciting times ahead and projects to plan!
